Packaging design and visual identity created from the ground up for LOVO, the plant-based milk chocolate company who introduced the first and only line of milk chocolate bars using a variety of plant milks designed to match whatever flavor you’re craving that day.

Project Overview





Better for your body; better for the planet.


LOVO came to Moxie Sozo with a delicious range of vegan, gluten-free, and non-GMO plant-milk-based chocolate bars and the unique challenge of breaking into the milk chocolate category as a 100% plant-based offering.

With a little help from fine chocolatiers in Switzerland, the home of milk chocolate, co-founders Courtenay Vuchnich and Simon Lester crafted supremely creamy, sublimely flavorful plant-based milk chocolate bars with the promise of “better for you, better for the planet and—we think—better tasting.”

The Challenge





Winning over chocolate-lovers everywhere.


We needed to create a brand and package that communicated the creaminess and deliciousness of the chocolate while also telling the plant-based story without scaring off any conventional milk chocolate consumers. Not only did LOVO need to straddle the line between a wholesome indulgence and traditional milk chocolate, we wanted to win with an approachable sophistication that could win over chocolate lovers everywhere.

The Solution





The world of LOVO.


We joined LOVO’s co-founders Courtenay Vuchnich and Simon Lester to build the brand vision from the ground up and enter into the milk chocolate space as the first plant-based milk chocolate from plant milks. Our solution and visual identity pays homage to the chocolate’s roots in Switzerland’s milk chocolate legacy, while celebrating the brand’s plant-based recipes.

Beginning with the name “LOVO,” meaning a “crazy love” for chocolate, we built a brand based on the idea of the universal love of chocolate. We took this passion for chocolate and the founders’ desire for innovation and created a mouth-watering, creamy, inviting look and feel that nods to the milk chocolate space, while communicating the love for a new, dairy-free product.

The LOVO “world” we created is a luscious, plant-filled collection of scenes illustrated with foliage, nuts, creamy milk drops, birds—including turacos, the national bird of Switzerland—squirrels, and milk jugs. The sharper-eyed will also spot the Matterhorn’s fabled monster, the Yeti. Our periwinkle base helps cue milk chocolate, while also positioning the brand as an approachable luxury. Pops of colors—affectionately named Alp Sky, Meadow, Snowbell, and Alpenglow—compliment our creamy base and cue flavor.

The Result





Moxie Sozo developed a brand strategy and identity that allowed LOVO to embody taste appeal and deliciousness unlike any of its vegan competitors. The resulting premium brand turned heads nationwide, defying expectations from the industry and consumers alike and garnering positive media coverage.
