Bringing more people to the table.
Newly-acquired Funny Farm knew it needed a rebrand to expand its audience beyond dietary restriction shoppers and into the mainstream. Moxie Sozo met the challenge with a fresh brand identity and packaging that highlighted its goat milk-based point of difference while heaping on taste appeal. The resulting packaging found its way to new shelves -- and pantries -- in nationwide distribution.

	(02)The Challenge



	

Starting from scratch.
Goat milk—which is A2 dairy rather than A1 dairy, like cow’s milk—sets Funny Farm Foods apart from its competitors. Studies show it’s easier to digest, which means that people who experience lactose intolerance might not have to sacrifice the rich flavors of dairy with products like Funny Farm’s macaroni and cheese or ice cream.While the goat milk recipes are what differentiate Funny Farm from other food products, we had to keep in mind the barriers to purchase when it comes to the purchase and consumption of goat milk: taste and odor. We knew that taste appeal would be an especially important creative consideration moving forward.In addition, it was important to avoid a look and feel that appeared too juvenile, yet still felt undeniably fun, in line with the company values, and communicated “goat.” Other creative challenges included: How do we communicate “goat”—our primarily point of differentiation—prominently without scaring away consumers who are concerned about the taste and odor of goat milk? How do we show the consumer that the product tastes good, even though it was made with goat milk? How do we communicate that these recipes are still creamy, delicious dairy products, only with a different kind of dairy? Where do we draw the line between “fun” and “funny”?

	(03)The Solution



	

Hand-crafted, goat goodness.
We knew that the new Funny Farm identity needed to be bespoke, yet unpretentious and still inclusive. Our design solution channeled quirky and bright energy into an identity and package design that feel hand-crafted and one-of-a-kind, supplemented by large and approachable messaging brought to life with hand-drawn typography, friendly goat illustrations to sell our point of differentiation, and product photography to highlight taste appeal. The new visual identity communicates approachability, warmth, fun, and—most importantly—goat goodness. Though not exclusive, the new identity is loud an d proud, and large messaging clearly informs consumers of the wholesome ingredients and benefits of goat’s milk. To achieve a one-of-a-kind identity, I created a custom Funny Farm font, designed to flex and adapt to a variety of sizes and platforms. Inspired by hand-painted signs and woodblock type, with a handful of quirk and personality, I developed a variety of weights, styles, and ligatures that were designed to be mixed and matched and paired together in endless ways, creating a unique outcome each time the font is used.
Funny Farm sources their goat milk from their co-op of family farms, so, in addition, we wanted to highlight the small-batch nature of these products on the packaging. For inspiration, we turned to hand-painted signs. The logo is a prime example—it has character and variety, and the versatile graphic in the middle can be seen as the top of a windmill, a flower, or a shining sun. Bespoke signage played a significant role in the fonts for the packaging design, giving the brand a handmade and unpretentious yet endearing look.

(04)The Funny Farm Font



	

Hand-crafted, goat goodness.
We designed a custom, handwritten typeface for Funny Farm to capture the imperfect, hand-crafted, just-a-little-off personality of the brand. The Funny Farm font features four weights—Regular, Thin, Condensed, Extended—and most letters have a few alternate characters, mimicking the quirkiness and variability of real handwriting. The collection of weights were designed to be mixed and matched, creating quirky combinations of varying widths and thickness.&#38;nbsp;
On pack,&#38;nbsp;we utilize our typography in big ways. Our packaging characteristically has very few words and, by keeping our messaging short and sweet, we can maximize what's most important with our large, quirky letters. We let our flavors and unique offerings stand loudly and proudly and always support our products with important benefits. At times, our font is made quirkier by replacing a standard letter with an angled or slightly wonky alternate. With the Funny Farm font, the combinations are endless.

On more shelves, for more people to love.
The redesign has been such a positive step up from their prior packaging that Whole Foods, who previously removed the brand from the store, reaccepted Funny Farm Foods into their lineup. The Moxie Sozo team agreed that the goat image and font really capture people’s attention, and the rest of the pack informs consumers of the wholesome ingredients and benefits of goat’s milk. Stocking up the ‘Bar Cart.’
Inspired by the sun, surf and beaches of their seaside home, Dogfish Head crafted a new take on the crush cocktail that is both citrus-forward and crush-able.&#38;nbsp;Dogfish Head came to Moxie Sozo to better differentiate their canned cocktails from the sea of new competitors. Our evolution looked to optimize the hierarchy and elevate the key difference of culinary-developed flavors. We upped the premium factor for the mixologist-minded consumer without deviating too far from the previous packaging and losing people familiar with the product.

A ripple effect.
We created a packaging design system that hinges on the big idea that small, consistent habits can create a significant ripple effect on your life. At the core of each packaging design is the Mantra Labs existing mark, anchoring the brand, and therefore, the brand offerings, at the center of these daily, positive changes. Concentric rings, dotted with positive mantras, radiate from the brand mark to signify the ripple effect of consistent habit-building and to inpsire consumers to engage in building greatness through small, achievable changes.

LOVO came to Moxie Sozo with a delicious range of vegan, gluten-free, and non-GMO plant-milk-based chocolate bars and the unique challenge of breaking into the milk chocolate category as a 100% plant-based offering.

 With a little help from fine chocolatiers in Switzerland, the home of milk chocolate, co-founders Courtenay Vuchnich and Simon Lester crafted supremely creamy, sublimely flavorful plant-based milk chocolate bars with the promise of “better for you, better for the planet and—we think—better tasting.”

Winning over chocolate-lovers everywhere.
We needed to create a brand and package that communicated the creaminess and deliciousness of the chocolate while also telling the plant-based story without scaring off any conventional milk chocolate consumers. Not only did LOVO need to straddle the line between a wholesome indulgence and traditional milk chocolate, we wanted to win with an approachable sophistication that could win over chocolate lovers everywhere.

The world of LOVO.
We joined LOVO’s co-founders Courtenay Vuchnich and Simon Lester to build the brand vision from the ground up and enter into the milk chocolate space as the first plant-based milk chocolate from plant milks. Our solution and visual identity pays homage to the chocolate’s roots in Switzerland’s milk chocolate legacy, while celebrating the brand’s plant-based recipes.Beginning with the name “LOVO,” meaning a “crazy love” for chocolate, we built a brand based on the idea of the universal love of chocolate. We took this passion for chocolate and the founders’ desire for innovation and created a mouth-watering, creamy, inviting look and feel that nods to the milk chocolate space, while communicating the love for a new, dairy-free product.The LOVO “world” we created is a luscious, plant-filled collection of scenes illustrated with foliage, nuts, creamy milk drops, birds—including turacos, the national bird of Switzerland—squirrels, and milk jugs. The sharper-eyed will also spot the Matterhorn’s fabled monster, the Yeti. Our periwinkle base helps cue milk chocolate, while also positioning the brand as an approachable luxury. Pops of colors—affectionately named Alp Sky, Meadow, Snowbell, and Alpenglow—compliment our creamy base and cue flavor.

Moxie Sozo developed a brand strategy and identity that allowed LOVO to embody taste appeal and deliciousness unlike any of its vegan competitors. The resulting premium brand turned heads nationwide, defying expectations from the industry and consumers alike and garnering positive media coverage.

Deep Ayurvedic was both a creative challenge and a deep dipe into an entirely new world for me. Partnerning with experts in the Indian system of holistic medicine, we translated a nuanced and deeply rooted science into a clear, compelling, and relevant brand for a modern U.S. consumer. Spanning a full brand identity system, packaging, and website, we developed a brand that honors the richness of the science while proudly bringing it to a new audience.

Modern health, ancient roots.
Deep, an Ayurvedic-based company with a multitude of brands and offerings in the CPG space, came to Moxie Sozo with a functional range of Ayurvedic elixirs, teas and herbal supplements and the unique challenge of translating the ancient science of balance into a modern wellness brand positioned for modern yogis and health enthrusiasts.&#38;nbsp;

 We developed the brand from the ground up with a system built around the three Ayurvedic doshas, or energies. Combining food and medicine—or flavor and function—we artfully paired each product’s flavor with the corresponding dosha function. Ethereal, abstract and beautiful, our diffused illustrations evoke wonder and curiosity, all while creating a sophisitcated system that still allows for taste appeal to break through.
On the website, our illustration is cropped in on dramatically, as if under a microscope, and subtly moves around as the consumer scrolls. This is both a conceptual invitation for the viewer to take a closer look at our trustworthy and ethically sourced ingredients, as well as a way to add life and color to an otherwise clean and sophisticated system.

Becoming the world’s favorite canvas.
Rudi’s Bakery®, a beloved brand from Boulder, Colorado, came to us with a major SOS. The almost 50-year-old brand had been watered down to “shockingly ordinary,” distribution and sales we're down compared to their peak, they’d experienced significant national organic bread distribution loss, the continued growth of super competitors brought the pressure, and (as if that wasn’t reason enough!), their visual identity and lack of clear packaging architecture created a system that was hard to work with.




Rudi’s came to us with a newly defined strategic foundation, but without a clear or compelling way to bring it to life. We partnered with them to sharpen and expand that strategy, ultimately grounding the brand in a simple, ownable idea: Rudi’s as the canvas for better bites and better days. From there, our focus was translating that positioning into a visual and verbal system that could create distinction across both the bread and freezer aisles—while setting the brand up for future innovation.

Artfully crafted. Ridiculously good.
The solution was a flexible, intuitive design system centered around expressive brushstrokes—an idea rooted in the notion of artistry, invention, and craft. We built a hierarchy of swashes that each serve a clear role: a consistent mark for the logo, a distinct space for key benefits, and a dynamic layer for flavor and product variety. This approach allowed us to bring energy, appetite appeal, and personality to the packaging while also creating a system that is easy to use and scale. Instead of a rigid or overly complex structure, the system gives Rudi’s team the tools to confidently expand into new products without reinventing the brand each time.Across packaging, brand assets, and activation, the result is a cohesive yet expressive identity that feels warm, optimistic, and unmistakably Rudi’s. The visual language balances consistency with flexibility, bringing clarity to the shelf while allowing each product to feel distinct. Ultimately, the work transforms Rudi’s from a functional bakery brand into a more joyful, ownable presence—one that invites people to build something better, one bite at a time.

Craft-brewed, authentic tea
Moxie Sozo had previously designed the brand identity and packaging look and feel for Tea Horse Road’s premium, glass-bottled line of teas when they approached us looking for a fresh take on their new, craft-brewed canned tea offering.
My role as lead designer, teaming up Qian Lui for illustration, was to design a unique layout and system for the canned teas, while still maintaining cohesion with the glass bottles.
Designed with an asymmetrical illustration forging its way through the center of the can, each flavor of tea creates a sense of place through a unique illustration—created by the aluminum of the can showing through for a metallic finish—and decorative edges and borders inspired by the region or city.
